Step-by-Step Guide to Join Indian Air Force

First Step: Appear for the Written Examinations

The first step in achieving your dream of joining the Indian Air Force is to take the written examination for which you will have to meet the eligibility requirements. In the following, we have elaborated on the entrance exams required for those aspiring to join the Indian Air Force:


National Defence Academy (NDA)

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) holds the NDA Exam twice a year, and it can be your ticket to joining the Indian Air Force after graduating from high school. After passing the exam, candidates are given the option of joining one of the three armed forces: the Navy, Army, or Air Force. 


Combine Defence Services (CDS)

Many of us are drawn to serve our country while getting a bachelor's degree. The easiest entry ticket for such aspirants is to pass the CDS exam. The CDS, like the NDA, chooses applicants for all three forces and gives them the option of choosing their preferred force.


Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT)

Undergraduates who are interested in entering prestigious positions in the Indian Air Force can also take the AFCAT. One of the most renowned government examinations after 12th, the AFCAT exam allows you to be selected for a class-1 gazetted position in Ground Flying Duties (non-technical and technical).


Second Step: Clear Stage I and II

Aspirants will get a call letter from the authorised authorities if they are selected through any of the above-mentioned admission gateways. Following that, the candidates must present to the Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) centres. Candidates must complete two tests in order to be fully evaluated for the post of an Airways Officer.


Stage I Testing


  • Officer Intelligence rating test

  • Picture perception and discussion test


Stage II Testing


  • Psychological test (written test) conducted by a psychologist

  • Group tests involving both outdoor and indoor activity 

  • Personal interview

  • Applicants applying for the Flying Branch must quality Computerised Pilot Selection System


Third Step: Medical Examination

Candidates who pass all stages of the selection process will be sent for a complete medical examination. During the procedure, they will closely monitor the aspirants to ensure that they meet all of the medical requirements. Your medical evaluation will take place at either the Institute of Aviation Medicines in Bengaluru or the Air Force Central Medical Establishment in Delhi.


Fourth & Final Step: Wait for the All-India Merit List

As a candidate, you are not required to participate in this last round. The officials prepare a merit list of all the selected applicants. They are carefully reviewed on all of the above parameters, whether it is a medical examination, an interview, or a written exam. Along with all of these parameters, the number of vacancies for a specific region is also considered before releasing the final merit list of shortlisted candidates.
